Waunakee, Hudson Win State Lacrosse Titles

SUN PRAIRIE — Waunakee captured its first boys lacrosse championship, while Hudson won the girls' title at the 2025 State Lacrosse Championships Saturday at Ashley Field at Bank of Sun Prairie Stadium.

In the boys title game, Waunakee (22-2) defeating Kettle Moraine/St. John’s NW Academies (19-3) 9-8 win to give the Warriors their first state title in program history.

Waunakee trailed 3–1 after the first quarter but rallied with a four-goal second period to take a 5–4 lead into halftime. The Warriors extended the lead in the third quarter and held off a late surge by the Lasers in the final minutes.

Justin Sawicki scored five goals and added an assist to lead Waunakee. Adrian Millin contributed a goal and two assists, while Alex Mikkelson chipped in a goal and three assists. Ethan Evans also scored and recorded an assist for the Warriors. Goalie Isaac Schultz anchored the defense with 10 saves.

Kettle Moraine was led by Eli Schwartz, who totaled two goals and two assists. Travis Davidowski and Mason Huebner each scored twice and added an assist. Tommy Stoll had one goal for the Lasers, while goalie Keegan Pautz finished with eight saves.

The Lasers held a14-7 advantage in faceoffs and in collecting ground balls, 30–27. However, the Warriors were more efficient with its possessions. Kettle Moraine held a 31-25 edge in total shots, and both teams finished with 17 shots on goal. Waunakee was more effective in transition, completing 11-of-14 clears, while Kettle Moraine converted 10-of-14.  The Warriors committed 14 turnovers compared to Lasers’ 15.

In the girls championship game, Hudson (20-0) completed an undefeated season by winning the championship with a narrow 10-9 victory over Kettle Moraine/Badger (19-4).

The Raiders rallied from a 6–4 deficit at halftime, outscoring Kettle Moraine 6–3 in the second half. The Raiders' balanced attack featured three goals each from Josie Jones, Reagan Kubler, and Gretchen Whitten. Jones added an assist, while Kubler contributed one as well. Ella Wolfe also recorded two assists in the victory. Goalkeeper Sophie Thompson made a pair of saves in goal for the Raiders.

The Lasers were led by Mya Kreblin, who netted three goals and added an assist. Isabella Dretzka also scored three goals, while Ella Mautz contributed a goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Blehovde made eight saves in the loss.

The game was a closely contested throughout with Hudson outshooting Kettle Moraine 23-14 in the game, but it was Hudson's defense that was the key to victory, limiting Kettle Moraine to just one goal in the final quarter.

The Raiders also controlled possession with a 13–10 advantage in draw controls and a 14–12 edge in ground balls. In addition, the Raiders converted 7-of 8-clears, while the Lasers were successful on 9-of-13 attempts.
